What safety gear does a motorcyclist need?

On Behalf of | Jul 27, 2022 | motorcycle accidents

Motorcyclists want to be as safe as they reasonably can when they’re on the roadway. It’s fairly common knowledge that a helmet is the most important piece of safety gear for a motorcyclist, but that’s definitely not all you should have.

Even though it’s warm outside, motorcyclists shouldn’t skimp on safety gear. Each of these is critical to ensure that you minimize the damage done to your body if you’re struck by another vehicle or if you fall off a motorcycle.

Riding boots

Riding boots should cover your ankle and be very sturdy. While you might be tempted to ride in sneakers or other shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops, these don’t offer any protection for your feet or ankles if you’re involved in a crash.

Protective pants

Never ride a motorcycle in shorts or in flimsy pants. You’re risking a serious case of road rash if you don’t wear protective pants that are made of thick material. Even when it’s hot outside, you should wear appropriate pants while riding.

Driving gloves

Driving gloves make it easier for you to control the motorcycle without having to deal with a lot of hand fatigue. Using gloves that are specifically made for motorcyclists offers you protection and convenience because some have features like being touchscreen friendly.

Even if you’re wearing the proper safety gear while you’re on your motorcycle, you may still suffer an injury if a vehicle slams into you. It’s imperative to receive proper medical care if you have any signs of an injury. You may also opt to seek compensation for the damages you’re dealing with because of the crash. This is done through a personal injury claim that’s filed in an Indiana civil court. You only have a short time to do this after the crash, so take action right away if you want to hold the negligent driver accountable for the crash.
