According to a 2022 crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 42,514 traffic fatalities reported in the nation. Of this total, 7,522 were pedestrians and 1,129 were children.
As road congestion increases in Indiana, it is crucial for drivers to become informed of the common driving habits that cause the most crashes in the state.
Drunk driving
Drunk driving is one of the leading causes of crash fatalities in Indiana. Last 2022, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute recorded 106 alcohol-related deaths in the state, with Marion County leading the highest number of operating while intoxicated (OWI) accidents annually.
When a person drives while they are drunk, they risk operating on the road with impaired judgment. This action not only puts their own lives at risk but the safety of the other drivers on the path as well.
Reckless speeding
When people drive at excessive speeds, they decrease their ability to hit on their brakes at the required stopping distance. This driving behavior can lead to high-speed crashes that may cause serious injuries to multiple drivers on the road.
Distracted driving
Distracted driving refers to any handheld activity that diverts a driver’s attention from the road, such as texting, eating and watching videos. This moving violation is dangerous and can increase a motorist’s risk of crashing.
Recognizing these poor driving habits can save lives
When people follow traffic rules and drive with caution, they can spot the signs of risky driving habits from other motorists and take measures that can help protect their and others’ safety on the road.
