3 dangerous distractions during a commute

Many people in the United States commute to work and back every single day. While distracted driving accidents can technically happen at any time, there is an elevated risk during commuting hours.

Additionally, there are some specific distractions that are more likely to occur during someone’s commute. Below are three examples of what these are and how they can cause serious crashes.

Drinking a cup of coffee

Coffee can be a distraction because it blocks the driver’s vision every time they take a drink. They also have to look down to pick up the coffee cup, or they have to continuously hold it in their hand. Moreover, spilling coffee is a significant distraction and could cause a driver to panic and crash.

Doing personal grooming

Other drivers may be on the way to work but may not be quite prepared. For example, someone may get in their car while running late and decide to comb their hair and button up their shirt while driving to the office. Both of those activities are distractions.

Getting started for the day

Many workers start their day by checking emails or text messages from coworkers, employees or their boss. They may think they can get a jump on the day by using their cellphone in the car, but this distracts them from driving safely on the way to the office.
