Why is using the brakes problematic in the snow?

On dry roads, the best way to avoid an accident is simply by slowing down. Many drivers are accustomed to hitting the brakes aggressively when they want to stop. They still feel fully in control, even when quickly approaching a turn or a backup in traffic.

However, on slick roads, this same mindset can lead to disaster. If you are driving in snow or ice, it is often best to avoid using the brakes. But why is this such a problem?

A loss of control

The issue with hitting the brakes is that it can cause you to lose control of the vehicle. As long as the tires are spinning, you may still have some traction, even in snow or slush. But if you hit the brakes and the tires lock up, they will slide. Instead of stopping your car, this eliminates your ability to steer or control your speed. A driver who suddenly loses control in this manner is much more likely to cause a serious car accident.

What should you do instead?

The best approach is to plan well in advance for when you need to stop. Long before making a turn, for example, take your foot off the gas and let the car’s engine slow the vehicle down naturally. Then, take the turn at a slow speed without touching the brakes. This method gives you the most control and reduces the chances of sliding or spinning out.

Unfortunately, other drivers often make mistakes in the snow, leading to accidents. If you’ve suffered injuries in an accident caused by another driver, be sure you understand all the legal options available to you.
