When it comes to Halloween fun, authorities in the City of Kokomo want kids to have as much fun as is safely possible. That’s why they’ve scheduled not just one but two nights for trick-or-treat activities.
As trick-or-treating in Indiana can definitely be weather-dependent, parents are encouraged to plan ahead for the weather before deciding if their children should go trick-or-treating on Wednesday, Oct. 30, or Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Or, if the weather is good, they can throw caution to the wind and accompany them both nights!
Other safety tips to observe
No matter which night your goblins and witches head out to collect treats, there are some basic safety rules all children should follow:
- Carry a flashlight – Since the bulk of trick-or-treat hours fall after dark, it makes sense to ensure that your kids have a flashlight enabling them to see breaks in pavement and any steps they must climb.
- Wear reflective costumes – Some store-bought costumes are made that way, but you can customize homemade outfits with strips of reflective tape on the back, front and sides.
- Stay in groups – While it is always better for parents to accompany their younger children from house to house, older kids who can be trusted to follow rules should head out in groups of friends and never alone.
- Cross streets only at crosswalks – It’s never too early to teach youngsters street safety skills, like only using crosswalks and never darting out between parked cars.
Parents, also remember to check your children’s candy before they start eating it!
If your child gets struck by a car
Inevitably, every Halloween a child gets hurt because a driver didn’t see or notice them as they collected their candy. If it happens to your child, their injuries could be extensive and require a long, expensive recovery. Seeking damages from the at-fault driver is one way to afford the long-term medical care your child may need.
